Bone grafting is rebuilding bone where it has been lost in the jaw. This procedure is typically needed for people who have had bone loss and are getting implants or dentures, have gum disease, or getting an extraction. Sometimes it is needed if the deterioration is affecting the surrounding teeth.
A bone grafting substance, such as from your own body or synthetic material among other options, is surgically inserted into the jaw. In time, the body works to heal the area on its own, making the jaw good as new. To determine if this is needed, a dentist will perform a full oral examination, including x-rays to evaluate the extent of bone loss. Treatment options will be discussed and a plan devised to get you on your way back to health.
What Happens at an Appointment
The area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Sedation therapy can be administered if needed. A small incision will be made, the area cleaned, and the bone grafting material will be carefully placed. The incision is then stitched. Follow-up instructions are given and a subsequent visit may be needed.
