The goal of a dentist is always to save the natural tooth. However, in some circumstances, it is necessary to perform a dental extraction, the complete removal of a tooth and its root. Extractions are often needed when there is severe decay, fractures, or injury that cannot be repaired by other means.
If there is crowding among the teeth, an extraction may be needed as well as for impacted teeth or in cases of severe gum disease. Extractions may also be done in preparation for receiving dentures.
What Happens at an Appointment
After examination and x-rays, a dentist will determine if an extraction is necessary. On the day of your extraction, a local anesthetic is administered to ensure a painless procedure. The tooth is carefully removed and the area cleaned. Follow-up instructions will be given.
