Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Pre-prosthetic surgery is used to prepare the mouth for dentures, the dental prosthesis. This can include reshaping and smoothing out the gum line to help the dentures fit perfectly and ensure function is restored when the prosthesis is in place.

Without pre-prosthetic surgery, dentures may be uncomfortable for the patient to wear because of bony ridges in the jaw. The dentures won’t work to their full potential and could cause possible sores.

What Happens at an Appointment

If pre-prosthetic surgery is needed for you to be fitted with dentures, the dentist will explain the entire process to you. Depending on the extent of surgery, a local anesthetic or general anesthesia will be used to ensure the process is pain free. You will be monitored through the surgical process for a safe and productive surgery.
